For water, the oxygen has two bonding pairs and two lone pairs. Electron geometry is tetrahedral; molecular shape is bent; O-H bonds are polar.

  1. Lone pairs change molecular shape.
  2. Bond dipoles do not cancel in a bent geometry.
  3. Shape affects net polarity.
